PN condemns raid on journalist’s home, tells govt to respect media freedom

SHAH ALAM – Perikatan Nasional (PN) has urged the government and authorities to respect the rights and legitimate role of the media following a police raid on the home of a news portal journalist, as reported on Monday.
PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the coalition viewed seriously the raid on the residence of Malaysiakini journalist B Nantha Kumar, which was believed to be linked to a report on a proposed foreign worker recruitment system known as the Universal Recruitment Advanced Platform (Turap).
He said the operation, which allegedly involved a 45-minute search by police officers, was carried out over claims of possession of official Cabinet documents, although no items or documents were reportedly seized.
“This development goes beyond just a journalist or a media organisation. It raises broader concerns about media freedom and the space for journalists to report on matters of public interest without fear,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Earlier, Nantha said two plainclothes police officers arrived at his home in Seri Serdang at 2.30pm with a search warrant before conducting a search of the premises.
The investigation is reportedly being carried out under Section 203A of the Penal Code for unauthorised disclosure of information and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
Commenting further, Takiyuddin also questioned why the ministry involved opted to lodge a police report instead of providing clarification, despite the portal having reportedly been given space for response.
“In a mature democracy, responses to media reports should prioritise explanation and transparency, not actions that may be perceived as restricting legitimate public scrutiny,” he said.
He added that the foreign worker recruitment sector has often been associated with transparency issues and governance weaknesses, making media reports on reforms in the sector a matter of public interest that warrants scrutiny.

PN therefore urged authorities to provide detailed explanations on the basis of the raid, ensure full respect for constitutional rights and avoid actions that could negatively impact investigative journalism.
“Malaysia must remain a country where wrongdoing is investigated, but at the same time, journalists should not be treated as threats for reporting on matters of public interest,” he stressed.
