KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia gear up for a pivotal Day 3 at the Thailand SEA Games on Friday (Dec 12), with medal prospects in athletics, gymnastics, karate, petanque, snooker and several new events in Bangkok and Chonburi.

The karate squad carry the heaviest expectations after setting a target of three golds, buoyed by their four-gold haul in Phnom Penh two years ago.

All eyes will be on exonenent C. Shahmalarani, as she chases a golden hat-trick in the women’s under-50kg kumite, having struck gold in both the 2021 Hanoi and 2023 Phnom Penh editions.

Shahmalarani arrives in Bangkok in superb form after winning silver at the World Championships in Cairo last week – a result that has lifted confidence within the camp.

Malaysia also hold strong medal hopes in the women’s under-55kg through Adeola Fay Robert, while K. Thevendran, S. Geerijaieswaran and H. Sureeya Sankar are contenders in the men’s 55kg, 60kg and 67kg divisions.

Thor Chuan Leong will be fired up to keep the country’s dominance in six-red snooker when he battles in the final against Thailand’s Poramin Danjirakul.

Malaysia have won the last three editions through Lim Kok Leong (2021) and Moh Keen Hoo (2023) following his own triumph in Naypyidaw 2013.

Athletics will take centre stage with Umar Osman expected to defend his men’s 400m crown, joined in the final by Khalil Helmi.

Also in action are men’s high jump pair Farrell Glenn Felix Jurus and Eizlan Dahalan; hurdlers Armin Zahryl Abdul Latif and Rizua Haizad; hammer throwers Nurul Hidayah Lukman and Grace Wong; shot-putter Nani Sahirah Maryata; and 400m runner Chelsea Cassiopea Evali Bopulas.

Malaysia’s gymnasts also enter the day with realistic podium chances, led by Shahrul Aimy in the men’s vault and the women’s duo Cadence Teh and Yeap Kang Xian in the floor and balance beam.
