Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the government has already begun implementing preliminary measures and initiatives to mitigate the anticipated price hikes.

Mohamad said the surge in global oil prices is expected to pressure the food supply chain, particularly the livestock and fisheries sectors.

“We cannot afford to be complacent, especially with the rising costs of poultry feed ingredients such as grain corn and soya.

“Price fluctuations are expected, and we will monitor the situation closely to respond to any significant changes,” he said during a press conference following the launch of Agro Penjaja-i at Wisma Tani today.

He said that while there are currently no disruptions to shipments, the global oil price hike has directly affected logistics and agricultural input costs.

“There is no disruption in supply, but when oil prices rise, shipping costs inevitably follow. The same applies to fertilisers; when an energy crisis occurs, it affects the entire chain,” he said.

To counter the impact of the global energy crisis, the ministry is focusing on strengthening the aquaculture sector.

This move aims to ensure a stable protein supply should deep-sea catches decrease in the coming months due to rising operational costs for fishermen.

“The ministry is prioritising aquaculture to ensure that fish production can meet our protein needs over the next three to four months if there is a shortage in marine landings,” he said.

However, Mohamad said the supply of basic food items remains under control, with rice stocks sufficient until the end of the year.

He also said the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) is working to resolve the issue of vegetable dumping in Cameron Highlands to prevent further losses for farmers due to market surplus.
