Azam: I wanted to ensure support for new MACC chief

PUTRAJAYA: Former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said he meant no ill will when he reminded graft-busters not to “sabotage” the new chief.

He said the remarks in his farewell speech were aimed at stressing the importance of supporting the new leadership.

Azam said he wanted to ensure stability and continuity in MACC during the leadership transition.

“I used those words to drive home the importance of supporting him,” he said, referring to new MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman.

“When a new hand takes the helm, questions can arise among officers.

“I took the opportunity to remind them of their duty to the commission and the country.

“I wish the new chief commissioner well and hope the commission will fully support his leadership.”

At his farewell ceremony on Tuesday, Azam had urged officers not to undermine the new leadership.

“Please give your support to the MACC top management because they will continue our legacy.

“In any organisation, we must remain loyal to the leadership.”

He said loyalty and cooperation with the new leadership were crucial to ensure continuity and preserve the legacy of past leaders.

Azam’s retirement caps a 42-year career in public service, beginning with the Anti-Corruption Agency, which became MACC.

Halim, a former High Court judge, assumed his duties as MACC chief commissioner yesterday.
