Santiago dropped, Ganabatirau to stand in Klang

DAP has named Kota Kemuning assemblyman V Ganabatirau as its candidate for the Klang parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).

“For Klang, we have decided on our state executive councillor, V Ganabatirau,” said DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook at a fundraiser here.

This means that former Klang MP Charles Santiago will not get to defend his seat where he has served for three terms.

While he did not mention Santiago by name, Loke said: “I stress that we appreciate the contribution of all our leaders.”

Loke also announced three other candidates for the Bangi, Puchong and Damansara seats, namely Lim Kit Siang’s political secretary Syahredzan Johan, former Bakri MP Yeo Bee Yin and former Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo respectively.

It was previously reported that Yeo was believed to be leaning “90-10” towards skipping the elections.

In an immediate response, Santiago said he did not intend to stand as an independent candidate following the snub from DAP.

Santiago had been increasing his majority in Klang in the three general elections since 2008. He won with a majority of 17,701 in 2008, 24,685 in 2013 and 78,773 in 2018.

In the last electoral roll, the constituency had about 55% Chinese voters, 26% Malays and 18% Indians.

Rumours that he would be dropped was met with firm resistance from Klang business groups, NGOs and the area’s residents, who praised Santiago for his community service and hard work – especially during last year’s floods.

Meanwhile, Syahredzan will be making his debut in electoral politics, taking over from two-term Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming who had previously said that he wanted to take a break from politics to “recharge and regroup”.

Loke said Syahredzan’s candidacy was needed as the party continued to push for its vision to be a “truly multiracial party”.

“Of course, we are grateful for the support of the Chinese and Indian communities. Without them, there would be no DAP today,” said Loke.

“But for DAP to go further … We must also get the support of the Malay community to make DAP a truly multiracial and Malaysian party.”

Malaysians will go to the polls on Nov 19, with early voting set for Nov 15. FMT
