KOTA BARU: Pas does not need to include its opposition to gambling in its election manifesto as the stance is already enshrined in the party’s Islamic principles, said Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

He said the party’s position was clearly stated in Clause 5 of the Pas Constitution, which outlines its objective of upholding Islamic values and laws in governance, including the prohibition of gambling premises and regulation of alcohol sales.

Sanusi, who is also Pas election director said society should rely on their effort, prayer and tawakal (trust in God) to achieve success in life, rather than turning to gambling.

“I hope the people in this state and society as a whole will stay away from gambling activities and not rely on luck.

“Pas’ position on the prohibition of gambling is clear and based on Islamic principles, and does not depend on whether the matter is listed in the election manifesto,” he said to reporters at the sidelines of the 72nd Pas Muktamar.

Sanusi was responding to a video by Perlis Mufti Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, who challenged Pas to include the issues of gambling and alcohol in its election manifesto.

The video was circulated by a portal’s Facebook account.

Sanusi said there was no need to include such matters in the manifesto as the document was more of an offer by a political party to voters, rather than provisions already enshrined in the party’s policies or constitution.

“People say a manifesto is not a holy book. Read the Pas Constitution — what does PAS stand for? But if people do not want Pas, they will still not want it, right? They will come up with all kinds of excuses.

“Islam prohibits gambling! Do we really need to put that in the manifesto too? Try reciting the syahadah (declaration of faith) as well,” he said.

On developments concerning gambling premises in Kedah, Sanusi said the state government was still awaiting further action, including possible legal proceedings if gambling operators filed claims for compensation in court.

“We will wait for the next steps. (If) they want to take the matter to court to seek compensation, we will fight again,” he said.
