‘Do not leave your fate in the hands of the elite’ – Sanusi

KOTA BARU: The elite should no longer determine the country’s direction, with ordinary Malaysians now needing to rise and have a greater say in shaping the nation’s future, said Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
He said the elite made up only about 10 per cent of Malaysia’s population but controlled a large share of the country’s wealth.
“An estimated 75 to 80 per cent of the country’s wealth is owned by this group, while 90 per cent of Malaysians share only about 25 per cent of the wealth.
“I think this is unfair. So, it is time for ordinary people to determine our own fate. Do not leave your fate in the hands of the elite. They do not understand us,” he said during the Podcast Anak Muda held in conjunction with the 72nd Pas Muktamar.
Sanusi said the elite not only did not understand the everyday language used by ordinary people, let alone the realities and hardships they faced.
He said this had caused some among the elite to take offence when colloquial terms used by the masses were perceived as crude, or misinterpreted as disrespectful, gangster-like or abusive.

“They do not use such language and they do not mix with us enough to hear us when we say things like ‘mampus cabut’ (get lost). That is normal in everyday conversations among ordinary people.
“Likewise, ‘biar mampus belah halilintar’ (go to hell). They are used to living in comfort, so how would they understand all this?
“Therefore, it should be the ordinary people who determine the direction of this country because they are the majority and share only a small portion of the economy’s wealth. The country’s structure needs to change. We cannot let this continue,” he said.
Sanusi said his remarks did not mean that all children of members of parliament failed to understand the struggles of ordinary people, but were directed at children of the elite who had grown up in wealth and privilege.
“Those who are born into abundance do not understand people who are struggling.
“They only pretend to understand, but they do not. So, I speak, lead and handle matters from the perspective of those who are struggling,” he said.
