KUALA LUMPUR: The government is committed to introducing parliamentary and administrative reforms to restore political stability and tackle Covid-19, as well as for economic recovery.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the cabinet, after its meeting today, had agreed on several proposed transformations which include introducing an anti-party hopping law and limiting the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years.
“This is in line with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s decree, together with the Malay Rulers, on the importance of a stable administration that can function as per normal in a crisis,” he said in a statement today.
Apart from introducing the anti-hopping law and the two-term limit for prime minister, Ismail also listed the implementation of Undi 18, an initiative to lower the voting age to 18, which would require an amendment to the Federal Constitution.
He also said the government proposed a balanced membership of Parliamentary select committees between government and opposition members of Parliament, and that each bill, including the Supply Bill, would be negotiated and mutually agreed upon.
“Opposition MPs would be included in the National Recovery Council to provide their views and propose improvements, and the opposition leader would be given remuneration equivalent to that of a minister.”
Ismail Sabri said these proposed reforms were to create a new political landscape by implementing transformation in government administration, especially in strengthening the role of the parliamentary institution.
He also said the government was committed to introducing more transformation measures from time to time.
“These transformations affirm the values and consensus across various religions, racial, and cultural backgrounds in the spirit of Keluarga Malaysia.
“It is also in line with the spirit of upholding the Federal Constitution as the highest rule of law, which is the core of community and the nation,” he added. Nst
