Continuous downpours since Friday brought the highest rainfall ever recorded in Selangor, resulting in extensive flooding throughout the state.

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the Drainage and Irrigation Department had informed him that rainfall had exceeded 380mm – more than twice the highest recorded rainfall for Selangor of around 180mm and the average rainfall of only around 60mm.

“In addition, high tides in affected areas exceeded 4.5 metres,” he said in a statement after chairing the latest Selangor state disaster management unit meeting today.

Klang and Shah Alam were among the worst hit areas and the Shah Alam expressway was closed, with massive jams on access roads.

Selangor has opened 46 temporary relief centres in Klang, Petaling, Sepang, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor districts as non-stop heavy rain lashed the state, with floods reported all over. About 3,600 people have been placed at 46 temporary relief centres.
