Kampung Baru residents complain of eviction before Raya

Residents of low-cost flats in part of Kampung Baru, in Kuala Lumpur city centre, have complained of being evicted just a month before Hari Raya, and of being offered “a puny sum” as compensation.

They said the eviction notices were pasted on their doors without indicating when they would have to move out.

A major development is set to take place at the area surrounding their block of PKNS flats in Sungai Baru, which is within Kampung Baru. The redevelopment will affect 328 homes, 264 of which are flats, on land measuring 6.8 hectares.

A resident said the notice from the federal director-general of lands and mines was dated March 22 but was only handed to residents on April 1, two days before Ramadan.

“We are very upset, because those issuing these notices are Malay and Muslim. Don’t they know it is Hari Raya next month and Ramadan now? So where will we live then?” said a resident who wanted to remain anonymous.

The residents said the amount of compensation offered was low compared to the current land value.

Most were offered RM240,000 to RM260,000, which was too little to buy another home in Kuala Lumpur, especially somewhere within Kampung Baru.

It is learnt that the offer is equivalent to about RM400 per sq ft in land value alone, compared to the market value of RM1,500 per sq ft.

“If I were to take up the offer, I will be given a temporary home at Kampung Kerinchi near Bangsar. However, that is really far away and we have a lot of commitments nearby.

“I need to go for my treatments at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital and the National Heart Institute, which is now nearby,” he said.

Another resident, who only wanted to be known as Syed, said Titiwangsa MP Rina Harun should step in to resolve the issue involving her constituents. FMT
