Man nabbed over Ampang surau case involving Azan, Friday prayers

PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a 46-year-old local man in Pandan Indah, Ampang, on Sunday (April 26) to assist in investigations into a case involving disobedience of the Sultan of Selangor’s order related to the conduct of Friday prayers at Surau Taman Seraya.
The arrest was made at about 3pm following a police report lodged by residents and the surau’s committee members over a petition raised in the residential area.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said police also seized a laptop, a mobile phone and several documents during the operation to assist in further investigations.
Checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs.
“The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a statement.

Comm Shazeli added that investigations are being carried out professionally and transparently in accordance with the law without compromise.
“Police will not tolerate any party attempting to incite excessive provocation that could disrupt harmony in the state,” he said.
Earlier, the committee of a surau in Ampang lodged a report at the Pandan Indah police station following allegations that certain parties had objected to the management of the place of worship, including the call to prayer (azan), congregational prayers and the use of the surau’s outdoor space.
Among the issues that caused tension were claims that the call to prayer was disturbing them, as well as requests for congregational prayers to be stopped.
