Ministry engages school bus, van operators over fuel price adjustments

PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has held an engagement session with the Federation of Malaysian School Bus Associations (PPPBSM) to discuss the impact of fuel price adjustments and their implications for school bus and van operators.

In a Facebook post yesterday, the ministry said that during the session, it explained how the government has given special attention to school bus and van operations’ reliance on fuel costs.

As a result, these vehicles have been listed under the public land transport category, making them eligible to apply for fleet cards and purchase fuel at subsidised prices.

The session, chaired by ministry’s Petroleum Regulatory Division secretary Mohd Nazib Che Din, also involved other stakeholders, including the Transport Ministry, Road Transport Department, Land Public Transport Agency, as well as representatives from Petronas, Shell and Petron.

The government has also introduced the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS) and the Subsidised Petrol Control System (SKPS) to ensure more targeted subsidy distribution.

Under these mechanisms, public land transport, goods transport and public water transport are eligible to purchase petrol at RM2.05 per litre under SKPS, while diesel is offered at RM1.88 per litre under SKDS for public land transport and RM2.15 per litre for goods transport.

The discussion also focused on the subsidy application procedures through the MySubsidi system, the process of applying for fleet cards from oil companies, the fuel quota allocation for school buses and vans, as well as proposals to strengthen the development of the sector.

Meanwhile, PPPBSM president Amali Munif Rahmat welcomed the engagement session and expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by KPDN and other relevant agencies in ensuring the smooth operation of school bus and van services, particularly in facing the challenges of rising costs.

He said the outcomes of the session would be shared with association members to ensure that operators benefit fully from the government’s targeted subsidy implementation.
