Subang MP Wong Chen expressed hope the police will conduct their probe into graphic artist and activist Fahmi Reza impartially.

PETALING JAYA: Subang MP Wong Chen has come out in support of graphic artist and activist Fahmi Reza after the latter was summoned by the police over a graphic on the new Sabah governor Musa Aman.

The PKR MP said political satire and parody works should not be deemed a crime and expressed hope that the police would be impartial in conducting the probe.

“I supported Fahmi’s rights as a political cartoonist when I was in the opposition and I will continue to support him now,” Wong said in a Facebook post.

Fahmi earlier gave a statement to the police at Bukit Aman over the graphic which was published on Dec 17, the same day Musa was appointed as Sabah’s 11th governor.

The artist is being investigated under the Sedition Act, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities, and Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

Fahmi said police told him he is being probed after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission filed a police report over the graphic.

Meanwhile, Wong’s fellow PKR colleague, Lee Chean Chung said the Federal Constitution provides for freedom of speech of which includes art.

“ I believe Fahmi’s artwork is meant to create awareness and is not detrimental.

“It may be critical, but it is a reflection of the public’s concern about social and political issues,” the Petaling Jaya MP said in a statement.

Lee said the authorities should allow the public to criticise freely as it would show that the government was open and respected diverse views.
