KUALA LUMPUR: Five motorcyclists were detained by police for performing “Superman” stunts during a crackdown on illegal street racing at the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) here.

City police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the five, aged between 16 and 22, were detained during an integrated operation on the highway near the Laman Seri Harmoni 33 condominium complex in Sentul.

“Two were 16, while the others were 19, 20 and 22. All five were believed to be travelling from Kuala Lumpur towards Gombak.

“We had observed them performing the ‘Superman’ stunt over a distance of about 2km before we detained them,” he said at a press conference here following the crackdown.

Zamzuri said they were detained under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless and dangerous driving.

“We would also look into whether the five suspects had previous records of similar offences,” he said.

In total, Zamzuri said the operation, which began at midnight, saw 778 motorcycles inspected and 414 summonses issued.

It also resulted in the seizure of 41 motorcycles, most of which had been illegally modified, including one whose rear brake had been removed.

One of the 16-year-old boys, who is no longer attending school, said he was detained after returning from work at a burger stall.

“After work, I would ride around here to ‘fly’. I was alone. Flying is just for fun. I was afraid, but I still do it,” said the Yamaha Lagenda rider, who does not have a licence.

Another 16-year-old boy, who is still in Form Four, also admitted that he performed the dangerous stunt for fun.

“I just wanted to ‘fly’ tonight from Gombak. Earlier, I went out with some other friends, but they got away.

“I was hanging out at a friend’s workshop earlier. I borrowed the motorcycle from a friend,” said the teenager, who does not possess a licence.

Zamzuri added that the area was a known gathering point for motorcycle groups in the city.

“It is among several locations frequently used for illegal street racing, alongside Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Raja Laut.

“The operation was also conducted following complaints from residents about large groups of motorcyclists converging at the location at night and causing noise with their illegally modified motorcycles,” he said.
