BN candidate Sahrihan Jani said he had received encouraging feedback during the campaign, attributing it to his four-year track record of serving residents regardless of race.
“I can see a shift in terms of increased support from Chinese and Indian voters.
“They are more comfortable with us because they have seen the work done by the state government and elected representatives all this while,” he told FMT.
Sahrihan said that non-Malay voters are now more willing to assess a government’s performance rather than remain loyal to any particular coalition.

“Perhaps this time, non-Malays are no longer a fixed deposit for PH. People are judging based on change and the results of the government’s work, regardless of race,” he said.
PH candidate Nor Yusof, however, said Chinese support for the coalition remained strong despite concerns that the non-Malay vote could be split following the entry of Parti Bersama Malaysia, a party formed by former PKR leaders.
“In Gambir, Chinese support for PH remains strong. The contest only involves BN, PH and Perikatan Nasional, so I do not see that support being affected,” he said.
Nor said his priorities, if elected, would include addressing basic issues affecting residents, such as street lighting, unpaved village roads, internet connectivity and youth development.
Meanwhile, PN candidate Suraya Sulaiman said being the only woman in the contest gave her an advantage in connecting with voters.

“I am a local and the only female candidate. I believe I can better understand the pulse of the community and attract support from all communities in Gambir, whether Malays, Chinese or Indians,” she said.
Suraya also dismissed claims of internal problems within PN, saying the machinery of Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party had been working together throughout the campaign.
She said her priorities, if elected, would include tackling environmental pollution, providing burial grounds, improving infrastructure, strengthening the rural economy and expanding TVET opportunities for youths.
In the previous state election, Sahrihan won Gambir with a 3,146-vote majority in a four-cornered contest.
The Johor state election is taking place on Saturday with 56 seats up for grabs.
