Negri MB rubbishes news report of Zahid working to overthrow Tuanku Muhriz

SEREMBAN: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is not involved in any move to overthrow state Ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, says Datuk Ismail Lasim.

The Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar dismissed the claim made in a Straits Times report, adding that Umno has always upheld, defended and preserved the supremacy of the institution of the Malay Rulers and the principle of a constitutional monarchy.

“With reference to the report published by the Straits Times dated Sept 8, I wish to deny allegations of the involvement of Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in any move to overthrow Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.

“I hope this issue involving the customs of Negri Sembilan can be resolved amicably, with wisdom, and according to the law to guarantee the stability, harmony, and well-being of the people of the state,” he said in a statement.

It was earlier reported that Ismail had sought an audience with a serving Undang and three former Undang as well as Tuanku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar on Aug 3 to seek their blessings after being sworn in as Mentri Besar a day earlier.

The Straits Times, quoting sources, claimed that Umno’s top brass, including Ahmad Zahid, secretary-general Datuk Seri Asyraf Dusuki and law minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said were also present.

The Straits Times, quoting legal and government sources, claimed Ismail was forced to sign the proclamation under duress and that Umno’s top leadership had been working in concert with the original Undang.
