No tie-up with national parties for Sabah polls, says Warisan
PETALING JAYA: Warisan will not form an electoral alliance with national parties for the Sabah state election, says its information chief, Azis Jamman.
Azis said that when it came to electoral pacts for the state polls, Warisan’s priority was to work with local parties, adding that its top leadership has entrusted all decisions on political collaborations to party president Shafie Apdal.
“However, this collaboration would only happen if there are local parties bold enough to ensure that the axis of power is fully returned to local Sabah parties without being subservient to or controlled by national parties or individuals with vested interests.
“If no local parties are courageous enough to take this stand, Warisan is not afraid to contest solo in the 17th Sabah state election.
“We are ready to provide a platform and an alternative for the people of Sabah, to ensure that Sabah is governed entirely by local parties without interference or control from leaders in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

The former Sepanggar MP also sought to clarify a Sinar Harian report which quoted him as saying Warisan needed to work with West Malaysia-based parties.
Azis said he was speaking in the context of alliances at the national level, reiterating that Warisan’s stand at the Sabah level was cooperation with local parties. He also urged Sinar Harian to amend the report.
“Warisan’s approach and principles remain steadfast in championing Sabah’s interests through governance by local parties that are genuinely bold in safeguarding the rights of the people of Sabah,” he said.
So far, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) led by former Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony has announced that it will go solo in the Sabah polls, which must be held by December next year.
Ruling coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Barisan Nasional are both courting Pakatan Harapan for an electoral pact. Sabah PH has, however, said it will only decide on alliances after settling internal talks among component parties.
PH, BN, GRS, Warisan and KDM are all allies at the federal level.
