DAP leaders slam Boo for asking Guan Eng to step down

DAP leaders have criticised Dr Boo Cheng Hau for asking Lim Guan Eng to step down as the national chairman of the party.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said Boo had a personal agenda against Guan Eng, adding that he was an opportunist who had used the DAP’s chairman’s trial, which resumed today, to gain attention.

“If he (Boo) seriously believes his statement, why didn’t he say it when Guan Eng was the secretary-general, which was the number one position. Why is he saying all this now?

“I fully support Guan Eng be it as secretary-general or chairman. I also believe in his innocence,” he told FMT, referring to the corruption charges against the former Penang chief minister.

This comes after Boo, a Johor party leader, cited Guan Eng’s ongoing undersea tunnel corruption trial as a reason why the latter should step down.

He said DAP’s new central executive committee (CEC) members should be free of any baggage to spur the party forward in regaining the people’s confidence and facing the looming general election.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok also disagreed with Boo, adding that his statement was unfair as Guan Eng had not been convicted.

“Boo is entitled to his own opinion. However, Guan Eng was elected by party delegates as chairman. None of us are questioning his integrity.

“He (Boo) likes to go against our own leaders openly to get popularity for himself. For me, I will not take his words seriously,” she said.

Pasir Pinji assemblyman Howard Lee said Boo should respect the decision of party delegates and the elected leadership.

Noting that Guan Eng had been elected in a two-tier process, he said that if Boo felt that his views were superior, perhaps he should be the one resigning from the party as he had been rejected both in his home state and at the national level.

“Shrouding oneself behind the disingenuous notion of freedom of expression, armed with the fumes of bitterness and disparagement from being rejected, one must wonder if he has the interest of the party and the nation front and centre of his toxic moves,” Lee said in a Facebook post. FMT
