PKR MP urges Selangor reps to back petition against parking scheme
Lee Chean Chung says he will seek the support of the Selangor government backbenchers for a joint petition calling for the review of the Smart Selangor Parking system.

PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP has called on government backbenchers in the Selangor state assembly to join him in petitioning for the postponement of the Smart Selangor Parking (SIP) system.

Lee Chean Chung, the MP for Petaling Jaya, questioned why the elected assemblymen have stayed silent despite growing backlash from those opposing the system.

He said several Selangor MPs, including himself, William Leong (Selayang), Azli Yusof (Shah Alam) and Wong Chen (Subang), have publicly called for a review.

“MPs derive their mandates from the people. We hold general elections every four to five years, costing hundreds of millions, precisely to ensure that public sentiment is reflected in policymaking

“Therefore, I am announcing today that I will begin engaging Selangor backbenchers to initiate a joint signature campaign, urging the state government to postpone and thoroughly, transparently, and professionally review the SIP scheme,” he said in a series of posts on X.

Lee and the three other MPs recently held a press conference in Parliament, urging the state government to review the proposal and establish an independent, bipartisan committee to reassess the scheme.

The Smart Selangor Parking system is slated for implementation in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Selayang on Aug 1, involving the four local councils, state-owned Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd, and a private company.

Enforcement would be carried out by the local councils with Rantaian Mesra acting as the system coordinator. The private company, which has yet to be appointed, will handle the four local councils’ daily parking operations.

Lee praised Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), which he said was the only local authority to formally object to the system.

The other councils have remained silent, he said, because both their mayors and councillors are appointed and may be reluctant to oppose a state-led initiative.
