Voters aren’t wrong — PH needs to win back their trust, says Kamil

AYER KEROH: Pakatan Harapan (PH) should not blame voters for rejecting the coalition in the Johor and Negri Sembilan elections, said PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
He said the results showed that PH had yet to fully understand voters’ concerns or provide convincing answers to their anxieties.
Kamil said the coalition must respect the electorate’s choices and examine why sections of the public remained unconvinced by its brand of politics.
“In a democracy, the people have the right to make their choices based on their own experiences, considerations, concerns and hopes.
“Our task is not to question their wisdom, but to understand the reasons behind their choices and find ways to regain their trust,” he said in his speech at the PKR Youth National Congress 2026 at the Melaka International Trade Centre here tonight.
Kamil said politics centred on performance alone might not be enough to overcome identity politics and fear-based narratives promoted by PH’s opponents.
“Some of our political opponents have succeeded in building narratives that are easy to understand and which appeal to emotions — that the Malays and Islam are under threat, that Malay political power is being eroded and that the future of the community is at stake.
“Such narratives may not necessarily be based on a complete picture of the country’s actual situation, but they succeed because they respond to something deeply human — the fear of losing what people consider important,” he said.
Kamil said PH must understand such concerns rather than dismiss them.
“Do not insult Malays who are worried about their position. Do not belittle Muslims who want to see their religion respected.

“Do not assume that every concern about race and religion is a sign of backward thinking. These anxieties exist, and mature politics must listen to them,” he said.
He said PKR Youth could not allow Malay and Islamic politics to be defined solely by those most willing to exploit sentiment, and must instead offer politics built on confidence.
