Multiple missed calls, then the shock: Man learns daughter stabbed at school

BANTING: The father of a 15-year-old student injured in a stabbing at a secondary school said he was shocked to learn what had happened to his daughter after missing several calls from the school.

Mohd Firuz Ibrahim, 43, said he was at work sorting goods when he noticed several missed calls on his mobile phone.

“When I looked at my phone, I wondered why there were so many missed calls. I then saw that her teacher had called,” he said, adding that he immediately returned the call.

“At first, I thought my daughter might have fallen ill or had a fever. I was shocked when I found out she had been stabbed,” he said.

Speaking to reporters at the hospital today, Firuz said doctors had informed him that his daughter had suffered multiple injuries, including to her left lung.

“When I arrived, she was in quite a bad condition. It was not long before they took her for a scan to determine the extent of her injuries,” he said, adding that doctors were working to remove blood from her lung.

“She is conscious and able to speak.”

Firuz claimed his daughter suffered about 14 stab wounds, mostly to her back, with other injuries to her face and head.

He said his daughter knew the 15-year-old student arrested over the stabbing, as they had been classmates last year.

Firuz said he did not believe his daughter was the intended target.

“Maybe she wanted to target someone else, but my daughter happened to be the closest to her,” he said, adding that his daughter may not have been able to run away in time.

Firuz, whose daughter is the second of his three children, said she had been studying at the school for the past three years and had never previously complained of being harassed or having problems with the other student.

Asked about security at the school, Firuz said improvements were needed following the incident.

“There should be proper screening at the entrance before anyone is allowed into the school,” he said.

Firuz said he was saddened by the incident but was now focused on his daughter’s recovery.
