Anwar-Onn Hafiz exchange just ‘check and balance’, not a quarrel, says Tok Mat

SEREMBAN: Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has dismissed suggestions that a public exchange between Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi amounted to a quarrel, describing it as a normal part of campaigning.
“That is just the ups and downs of campaigning, there is nothing to it, it is normal. I do not see it as a quarrel,” said Mohamad, who is also Umno deputy president.
Mohamad, popularly known as Tok Mat, said Anwar had merely rebuked Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz, who then responded in kind, and that this back-and-forth was healthy rather than confrontational.
“There is no quarrel. In a campaign, sometimes it is like that. The PM rebukes the MB, the MB rebukes back — and that kind of mutual checking is good.
“That is what you call check and balance,” he told reporters after officiating the 2026 Rembau Umno Division Youth, Wanita and Puteri delegates meeting here today.

On Friday, Anwar said it was inappropriate for Onn Hafiz to use the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) as campaign material for the Johor election.
Anwar said that the strategic project was a federal government initiative still going through the intergovernmental process between Malaysia and Singapore and should not be turned into political capital.
Yesterday, however, Onn Hafiz claimed that Anwar’s statement on the JS-SEZ masterplan document was inaccurate and could mislead the public and investors.
Mohamad, who is also Foreign Minister and Rembau Umno chief, also debunked the narrative circulating in some quarters that voting for BN in the Johor election would help free former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He said the outcome of the Johor election had absolutely nothing to do with Najib’s situation.

“Datuk Seri Najib’s position is a federal matter. We are a constitutional country with laws, and we must respect the law. It does not arise that if we win in Johor, Datuk Najib can be freed. That has absolutely nothing to do with it.
“So I hope Johor voters are not swayed or taken in by slander that if they vote BN, Datuk Najib will be freed. That is a separate matter entirely,” he said.
Mohamad also said BN’s campaign machinery was currently on very good momentum, but cautioned that it needed to be stepped up further given the attacks that were expected to intensify as polling day drew closer.
“BN’s momentum so far is very good, but I hope the party machinery and their work are further strengthened because there are many attacks and we need to counter unreasonable attacks .
“There is a chance some people will fall for them.
“So explain things clearly, especially regarding the claim that if BN wins, Datuk Seri Najib will be freed,” he said.
