Barisan is ‘colour blind’ in serving Johoreans, says Onn Hafiz

JOHOR BARU: Certain groups are making accusations of racism against the state government because they have no other issues of substance to raise, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

The caretaker Mentri Besar said Barisan Nasional has been busy developing Johor over the past four years, yet there are suddenly outsiders coming into the state to provoke the Chinese community.

“Some even say that I am a racist leader, but I am not – I am a leader for all.

“Barisan is not a racist party. We are colourblind; we help people regardless of race or skin colour because we are one big family in Johor,” he said when campaigning for Barisan’s Johor Jaya candidate Chan San San and Puteri Wangsa candidate Teow Chia Ling at Kampung Baru Plentong here on Monday (June 29).

Onn Hafiz, who is also Johor Barisan chairman, called on the Chinese community to work together with the state government to develop Johor and realise the Maju Johor vision.

“My message to the Chinese community is that I am ever ready to work with all of you to develop Johor,” he added.

Meanwhile, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, who was also present, said Chan is a Kampung Baru Plentong native and has been actively serving the constituency for the past 15 years.

“I remember vividly when major floods hit Labis in 2022, she cancelled her initial holiday plans and rushed to the frontlines with her husband to conduct flood relief work.

“She is a real hero and someone who will put her all into helping the rakyat,” he said.

Dr Wee said Teow, a chartered accountant, is also a Johor Baru City Council local councillor who has been serving the people.

“She is contesting against former education minister Dr Maszlee Malik, who has not received any positive feedback from Chinese community members during his 20-month tenure,” he added.

Teow is in a five-cornered fight against Maszlee, Muda’s Rashifa Aljunied, Bersama’s Nicholas Paul Vincent and independent candidate Wang Wee Siong.

Meanwhile, Chan faces a four-cornered contest against Pakatan Harapan’s Lee Wern Yiing, Parti Bersama Malaysia’s Lau Yi Leong and independent candidate Lim Hun Peaw.
