Pas says no cooperation with Bersatu despite PN ties

KOTA BARU: Pas has denied claims that it is backing Bersatu in the Johor election, insisting the party is merely honouring seat allocations within Perikatan Nasional (PN) despite the absence of political cooperation on the ground.

Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said there was no question of the party supporting Bersatu, as Bersatu remained a component party of PN.

He was responding to Amanah vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who had questioned Pas over its decision to allow Bersatu to contest several seats in the state election.

“Why should we be accused of backing Bersatu? Bersatu is still a member of PN.

“Why is he (Mahfuz) so busy with our affairs? He should take care of his own party,” said the Panchor assemblyman.

Amar said the seats allocated to Bersatu were those requested by the party itself, based on constituencies it believed it had the potential to win.

“We gave Bersatu those seats because it is still part of PN. Those were the seats they requested and identified as having winning potential.

“But there is no political cooperation between Pas and Bersatu in the Johor election,” he said.

Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang was reported as saying that the two parties would use separate machinery and campaign strategies, although they would share the PN logo in the July 11 polls.

Mahfuz had questioned Pas over its continued backing of Bersatu candidates in the Johor election despite serious allegations made by the party against its Perikatan Nasional ally.

Mahfuz said Pas leaders had previously accused Bersatu of betrayal in Perlis, undermining political efforts in Negri Sembilan, violating syariah principles in political cooperation, weakening unity within PN, being greedy in seat negotiations, lacking grassroots machinery and taking advantage of Pas.
