MBSP revokes Bertam nightclub licences, orders immediate closure

KEPALA BATAS: The Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) has revoked the premises, advertising and public entertainment licences of a nightclub in Bandar Setia Utara Fontaines, Bertam, here effective today, and ordered it to cease operations immediately.

Mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said the action was taken under Section 107(2) of the Local Government Act 1976 following repeated breaches of licensing conditions.

“The owner is prohibited from operating or reopening the premises and has been instructed to close with immediate effect. The notice was served tonight,” he said.

Baderul said failure to comply could result in enforcement action, including seizure and closure under Section 101(v) of the same act, adding that prosecution may also be initiated if outstanding compounds are not settled.

The revocation follows three inspections conducted on April 2

3 and 29, which found multiple offences, including the sale of alcoholic beverages without a licence, the display of advertisements without approval, and the placement of additional tables and chairs without a permit.

MBSP had earlier issued a show-cause notice requiring the owner to respond within seven days.

The city council proceeded with the revocation after the response was deemed unsatisfactory.

The premises had drawn public attention after complaints circulated on social media alleging it operated until early morning and was located adjacent to an educational institution, a female tahfiz hostel and an elderly care centre.

Residents, along with Kepala Batas Umno Youth members, had staged a protest outside the premises, calling for its closure, and alleged disturbances involving intoxicated patrons and littering in the area.
