PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has confirmed opening an investigation into content uploaded by an influencer on social media following complaints received from the public.

The MCMC said two interview sessions were conducted at its headquarters in Cyberjaya last Friday and today.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the influencer in question was spreading false information concerning the royal institution, making baseless accusations, and attempting to disclose individuals’ personal information without consent,” it said in a statement.

It said the influencer’s actions were allegedly carried out with the intent to hurt, harass or threaten others.

“Such behaviour has the potential to cause public unrest, fuel slander, pose threats to personal safety, and constitute violations of communication laws and personal data protection regulations,” it said.

The commission also stressed that all complaints will be investigated in accordance with the law, irrespective of status, popularity, or influence of the persons involved.

It said every investigation is conducted professionally, following a fair procedure and in accordance with the letter of the law under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The commission did not identify the influencer involved or elaborate on the social media content in question.

However, its statement comes two days after influencer Aliff Ahmad claimed the MCMC tried to intimidate him by sending a police car to his house on Friday night, hours after he was quizzed about his post involving former PKR MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Aliff was reported as saying the MCMC was “trying to use Section 233 of the CMA” against him.

“They are digging into my old posts (on social media) to find something they can pin on me,” he claimed in a Facebook post.

Last Friday, Nurul Izzah denied filing a report with the MCMC against Aliff, who offered to do a thorough background check of the PKR vice-president using a system he co-founded.

The former Permatang Pauh MP also said that Aliff should not be investigated just for making the challenge or statement involving her.
