Azmin new Bersatu sec-gen, Muhyiddin confirms

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has confirmed Azmin Ali’s appointment as the party’s new secretary-general.

Muhyiddin said the appointment of the Selangor Bersatu chairman had been finalised and would be officially announced soon.

It was previously reported that Azmin, the Hulu Kelang assemblyman, had declined the position as he wanted to focus on leading Selangor PN in its mission to capture the state at the next election.

“I mentioned this earlier, but at that time, many might have doubted (it). I want to reiterate that it is confirmed, and I have agreed to appoint Azmin as the Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general,” Muhyiddin said in a Sinar Harian report.

“I have met him and had a heart-to-heart discussion on what needs to be done, and God willing, he has agreed. There are no more issues.

“We aim to make Bersatu an exemplary party in terms of management and administration, free from corruption and focused on working diligently.

“As for the official announcement, it may be made after the general assembly or on the day of the assembly. I have already appointed him to the role, along with several other appointments such as the information chief and treasurer-general,” he said.

Azmin sat out Bersatu’s party elections on Nov 2, amid speculation that he was to take over from Hamzah Zainudin as the new secretary-general.

Muhyiddin retained the Bersatu presidency uncontested in the party polls while Hamzah faced no contest for the deputy president’s post.
