Dataran Merdeka left strewn with garbage after World Cup final watch party

PETALING JAYA: Federal territories minister Hannah Yeoh has slammed football fans who left garbage strewn all over Dataran Merdeka after a viewing party for the World Cup final early this morning.

Yeoh thanked Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for helping to clear the rubbish but said that throwing one’s garbage into a bin rather than on the ground should be a basic courtesy for all Malaysians.

She said Dataran Merdeka was not just a location for events, but an essential part of Malaysia’s history which represented the dignity of the capital city.

“Malaysia Madani isn’t just about the government carrying out its responsibilities but also Malaysians who know how to demand their rights without forgetting to carry out what is fundamental.

“As often stressed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, progress isn’t just measured by physical development but also our attitude in respecting and looking after public spaces.

“Kuala Lumpur is our home. Don’t litter your own home and expect someone else to pick up after you,” she said in a Facebook post.

DBKL also criticised the fans, saying it was sad to see Dataran Merdeka’s condition after the match.

“Early this morning, thousands of people gathered to cheer, celebrate football and share joy. However, when the cheering ended, this historic field was left in a mess.

“Dataran Merdeka is a symbol of the country’s dignity and history. The way we leave it reflects the way we value it,” DBKL said.

Over 25,000 fans turned up at Dataran Merdeka to watch the live broadcast of the World Cup final, which was shown on an outdoor screen.
