Negri royal row: PM Anwar leaves Istana Hinggap after hour-long meet

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at Istana Hinggap Negri Sembilan in Bukit Persekutuan, Kuala Lumpur At 6pm on Monday (Sept 21) and left after an hour, amid a dispute over the state’s royal leadership.

The vehicle carrying the Prime Minister entered the compound with by a police motorcycle escort.

He was said to have been seeking an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

Anwar later left Istana Hinggap Negri Sembilan at about 7pm.

He rolled down his car window and waved as his vehicle departed in a convoy accompanied by a police motorcycle escort.

This comes after members of the state executive council endorsed a proclamation to remove Tuanku Muhriz and recognised Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as the new Ruler.

The state’s Dewan Keadilan dan Undang has maintained that Tuanku Muhriz remains the rightful Ruler.

On Sept 17, the Attorney General’s Chambers said the proclamation dated April 19 was invalid because it did not meet mandatory requirements under the state constitution.

It also said the Mentri Besar and executive council had no unilateral authority to remove the ruler or declare the position vacant.

Anwar said on Sept 18 that any move concerning the ruler’s position must follow the prescribed procedures and urged Mentri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim and the state government not to bow to political pressure.
