Two companies fined RM110,000 for flouting workplace safety laws

BUTTERWORTH: Two companies were fined a total of RM110,000 by the Butterworth Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to offences under workplace safety and health laws.

In the first case, a manufacturing company pleaded guilty to failing to conduct a risk assessment for solar panel cleaning works on a roof with skylight sections, resulting in an accident involving a contractor’s employee on Aug 26, last year.

The company was charged under Section 18B(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and fined RM60,000.

In the second case, a construction company pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that a floor opening at a construction site was adequately barricaded to prevent workers from falling during formwork installation works on the first floor.

The company was charged under Regulation 19(3) of the Occupational Safety and Health (Construction Work) (Design and Management) Regulations and fined RM50,000.

The Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) said the convictions reflected its continued commitment to enforcing compliance among employers and responsible parties to ensure workplace safety and health.
