Police rescue girl allegedly locked in storeroom during school holidays

SEREMBAN: A 9-year-old girl was rescued after being locked in a storeroom at her foster family’s home throughout the recent school holidays, where she was fed only twice a day.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Yatim Osman said the district police headquarters received a report at 7.22pm yesterday regarding the neglect of the child.

“The report indicated that the girl was allegedly locked inside a storeroom behind a house in Taman Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban,” he said.

Following the report, police rescued the victim and arrested her foster mother.

Yatim said initial investigations revealed the victim had been adopted by the family since she was one year and eight months old.

He said the victim was only allowed into the house to use the toilet and had to return to the storeroom immediately after.

“Investigations also revealed the victim was often scolded and beaten by her foster mother over minor matters, such as stealing food at night,” he said.

He said police rescued the victim and sent her to Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Seremban for a medical examination and treatment.

A 46-year-old woman was arrested at the house to assist in investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, he said.
