Floods wreak havoc in several states

Heavy rainfall hit parts of Selangor, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu today, with floods reported in many areas this evening.

In Selangor, Klang was badly affected, with the fire and rescue department rescuing a family of three adults from flooding in Taman Dato’ Hormat in Telok Panglima Garang.

In a statement, the department reported the water was a metre high at the time of the incident. All three were brought to safety.

Elsewhere in the state, The Star reported that 50 homes along Jalan Seroja in Klang were inundated while Port Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri said his whole constituency was experiencing floods.

“The rain was extremely heavy and we received 220mm of rainfall today alone,” he was quoted as saying.

In Pahang, the New Straits Times reported flooding in Maran and Raub that resulted from almost 48 hours of non-stop rain, with 199 people evacuated from the two districts as at 8pm.

This comes after 33 people were moved to relief centres in Kuantan this morning to escape the flooding there, all of whom have since returned home.

In Maran and Raub, 218 flood victims from 60 families had to be moved to 11 evacuation centres there, Bernama reported.

In Kelantan, 735 people from 156 families are in evacuation centres. The worst hit areas are Kuala Krai, Gua Musang, Jeli and Tanah Merah.

In Terengganu, 66 people have been evacuated.

Typhoon Rai has hit the Philippines, causing massive destruction and at least a dozen deaths and meteorological reports say its remnants may bring heavy rains to parts of Malaysia too. FMT
