Opposition, govt heads in closed meet over MoU for reforms

A group of government and opposition leaders is holding a closed-door meeting at the extravagant St Regis hotel this evening to discuss a slew of reforms.

It is understood that the meeting is being held among at least 10 leaders from both sides of the divide – a day after the opposition agreed in principle to enter a memorandum of understanding with the government.

The Vibes understands that the meeting began at 6pm this evening, with several leaders, including Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, PKR information chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin and Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, seen entering the premises beforehand.

However, the media has been barred from entering the hotel grounds.

The meeting is expected to last an hour and the leaders are tipped to be issuing a joint statement upon conclusion.

Yesterday, the opposition said it will reach an agreement with the government based on the need to save lives and livelihoods of the people.

The reforms, which were mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, included the 10-year term limit for the prime minister post, anti-party-hopping laws, and the inclusion of the opposition in the National Recovery Council. TV
