Bar non-Melaka politicians from campaigning – Redzuan

The Election Commission (EC) should not allow out-of-state politicians and party supporters to campaign in the Nov 20 Melaka state election, says a Melaka MP.

Alor Gajah MP Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof feared that if party workers from other states were allowed to gather in large numbers, it might trigger a new wave of Covid-19 infections, as happened after the Sabah state election last year.

The Bersatu leader said only local grassroots members and politicians within the state should be allowed to campaign.

“I hope the Election Commission can tighten the SOPs regarding campaigning and disallow people outside Melaka from coming to campaign. We should not forget what happened in Sabah,” he said.

Meanwhile, DAP’s Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong said the EC should make special allowance for Melaka voters in Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak to cast postal ballots.

He said many had failed to cast their votes in the Sabah state election as they were living in the peninsular or elsewhere.

“Although I still believe it is not a good time to have an election, as Covid-19 is still with us, we have no choice but to go to the polls as the state assembly has been dissolved,” he said.

Polling has been set for Nov 20, with nomination day fixed for Nov 8. Early voting will be held on Nov 16.

On Oct 5, Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Mohd Ali Rustam agreed to dissolve the state assembly after four state assemblymen withdrew their support for the state government and chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali, rendering his government without a majority. FMT
