Fire guts electrical, kitchen equipment shop at Selangor wholesale market

SERDANG: A fire at the Selangor Wholesale Market here involved a shop selling electrical goods and kitchen equipment, the Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed.

The blaze destroyed about 90 per cent of the shop, but no casualties were reported.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said it received an emergency call at 11.04pm, with the first fire engine from the Seri Kembangan Fire and Rescue station arriving at the scene nine minutes later, Buletin TV3 reported.

The operation was assisted by 13 other fire stations, namely Bukit Jalil, Presint 7, Batu 18 Hulu Langat, Petaling Jaya, Bangi, KLIA, Keramat, Hang Tuah, Hartamas, Cyberjaya, Bukit Jelutong, Subang Jaya and Damansara, it said in a statement.

An initial report at 12.05am found that fire hydrants at the location could not be used.

The fire was brought under control at 1.20am, but firefighting efforts continued to ensure the blaze was fully extinguished.

As of 4.35am, about 70 per cent of the fire had been put out, with the remaining 30 per cent still being extinguished.

The operation involved 68 fire and rescue personnel, five Fire Rescue Tenders (FRT), one Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT), two Aerial Ladder Platforms (ALP), one Bronto Aerial Tower Vehicle (BATV), three Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) units and seven water tankers.

They were assisted by 67 personnel from 11 volunteer fire brigades, as well as from the police, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) personnel, and the Selangor Wholesale Market security team.
