KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Five Taiping Prison wardens will face charges tomorrow over injuries sustained by three inmates in an incident that also led to a death in January last year, police confirmed today.

The Royal Malaysia Police said investigation papers were returned by the Attorney General’s Chambers on June 29 with instructions to prosecute.

One warden will be charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, while two others face charges under the same section read with Section 34 for common intention. Another two will be charged under Section 324 read with Section 34 for causing hurt with a weapon.

The charges, carrying penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment of up to 10 years, will be heard at the Taiping Magistrates’ Court at 9am on Friday.

Police noted that a separate warden was charged on December 19 last year under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, an offence punishable by up to 10 years’ jail or a fine.
