SIMPANG RENGGAM: All political parties are free to determine their own election strategies, including Pas’ call for its members to support BN candidates in constituencies not contested by Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who is also the caretaker menteri besar, said the matter was entirely up to the respective parties.

“We are free to plan our own strategies.

“Whatever Pas does, whatever PN does, that is up to their respective strategies,” he said when met at the Simpang Renggam Prisons Family Day and a casual engagement programme here today.

Onn Hafiz was responding to reports that Pas had instructed its mbers and supporters to vote for Umno or BN candidates in state seats where PN is not contesting in the Johor election.

The Johor election will see contests in all 56 state constituencies. PH is contesting all seats, fielding candidates from PKR, Amanah and DAP, while BN is also contesting all constituencies.

Yesterday, BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did not rule out the possibility of internal discussions on cooperation involving Pas and Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan) in the Johor election.

However, he said such discussions, if they had taken place, were likely held at lower levels within the party.

“In politics, there are always discussions on various possibilities. But if those possibilities do not materialise, then we stick to contesting solo.”

Umno Supreme Council Member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam previously confirmed that there would be renewed cooperation with Pas in the state election, despite earlier saying he did not want to be “bitten by the same snake twice”.

He said it was a second chance for Umno to re-establish cooperation with Pas, with the possibility of including Wawasan.

On June 8, Tuan Ibrahim was also reported as saying that talks on cooperation between the Islamist party and Umno — facilitated through an internal committee involving both parties — had yet to produce any positive outcome.

He said claims that Pas had been offered exco posts and other appointments by Umno, particularly ahead of the Johor, Negri Sembilan and Melaka elections, were merely rumours.
