SHAH ALAM – Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has come to the defence of Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent call for voters to choose leaders who are not arrogant.

According to Akmal, the statement raised questions as to whether the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman was referring to Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno chairman.

“I have one question for the Prime Minister. Who is this arrogant Menteri Besar? Is he referring to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi?

“If so, I would like to remind everyone that Onn Hafiz has previously been called a youngster, accused of being racist, labelled a traitor and said to be ungrateful,” he said in a video posted on social media on Wednesday.

During a recent speech in Johor, Anwar urged the people of the state to choose wise leaders, not arrogant and aligned with Putrajaya to ensure policies can be implemented more effectively.

However, in response, Onn Hafiz stressed that he was not arrogant as alleged, but was merely carrying out his responsibilities to uphold the royal institution and safeguard the well-being of Johoreans.

Akmal also claimed that some Federal Government leaders had previously mocked the Johor leader’s physical appearance.

Nevertheless, he said Onn Hafiz had never responded to such attacks with insults or offensive remarks.

“Has Onn Hafiz ever responded with insults and abuse? The answer is no.

“What he has done is stand by his principles as an Umno leader who listens to the grassroots, including maintaining Umno’s position of not wanting to cooperate with PH in the Johor state election previously,” he said.

At the same time, Akmal claimed that Onn Hafiz had opportunities to criticise the PH government over several election promises that he said remained unfulfilled, but chose not to do so.

“Onn Hafiz could have retaliated by raising issues about unfulfilled manifestos, but he did not because his focus is on developing Johor and serving the people,” he added.

He said it was ultimately up to the people to judge who was truly arrogant and conceited in the country’s political landscape.

“To the people of Johor and Malaysians, you can see for yourselves who is truly arrogant and who prefers to label and insult others. In the end, the people will make their judgment at the ballot box,” he said.
