KUALA LUMPUR: Three individuals, including the deputy chairman of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), have been detained over the alleged misappropriation of zakat funds amounting to about RM230mil. Sources said two men in their 50s and 60s were detained between 3pm and 5pm on Tuesday (Apr 21) during an operation by the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) around the Klang Valley.

Another suspect, also in his 50s, was arrested earlier at about 2am when he turned up to give his statement at the Selangor MACC office. Initial investigations revealed that all three suspects, two of whom are company directors, are believed to have conspired in committing the offence between 2018 and 2024.

“Investigations also found that the NGO deputy chairman had transferred the RM230mil into his company’s account for investment purposes as well as for personal use,” a source said.

The source added that the probe is focusing on elements of public fund misappropriation. The NGO involved collects public donations to assist those in need.

During the operation, the MACC also seized 18 luxury vehicles as well as houses and properties worth about RM11mil. Other assets seized include cash and branded watches.
