Teachers in politics? Make sure no hidden conditions, says union

The National Union of the Teaching Profession has welcomed a government decision allowing teachers to be politically active, but hopes that there will be no hidden conditions that could cause problems for such teachers.

NUTP secretary-general Wang Heng Suan said teachers would welcome the government decision, but he reminded teachers that the education of their students must come first.

He said NUTP looked forward to an imminent circular providing additional details about the decision.

He hoped that new government guidelines on political participation would be clear and easy to understand so that teachers who choose to be active in politics do not violate the rules or conditions that have been set.

The government decision has led to a former minister sounding a warning that allowing teachers to be involved in politics could lead some to spread political propaganda in schools.

Those with ties to certain political parties could impart harmful messages to their impressionable students, Rafidah Aziz said. Propagation of selective political views would not be conducive to nurturing positive values and would erode Malaysia’s core principle of unity in diversity. FMT
