KL, Jakarta meet boosts hopes for getting maids

The meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Indonesian President Joko Widodo brings hope for a quick resumption of trade and social ties between the two countries.

The implementation of a planned travel corridor between Malaysia and Indonesia through a Vaccinated Travel Lane is welcome and timely.

It will provide a boost to tourism and business, which have been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is hoped that priority is given to opening the doors to Indonesian maids to work in Malaysia.

Many Malaysian families depend on foreign maids, especially in homes with elderly folk.

These families have been in a quandary for nearly two years since their maids, who had returned to their home countries, could not be replaced.

The travel corridor should expedite the approval of domestic helpers provided by maid agencies.

Ismail Sabri said foreign maids and other workers would be accorded better working and living conditions.

In this respect, he said the memorandum of understanding between the two governments on recruitment and protection of Indonesian domestic workers in Malaysia would be finalised as soon as possible.

It is hoped that the ministries concerned give priority to this issue so that there will be no slip between cup and lip and this will result in a win-win situation for all.
