Two Chinese nationals killed, local driver injured in NSE crash

IPOH – Two Chinese nationals were killed while a local driver was injured after their car skidded while trying to avoid a lorry at KM316.9 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) last night.

Tapah police chief Supt Johari Yahya said police were alerted to the incident at 10.30pm, and the deceased, identified as Chong Hong and Yucheng Pan, both 41, died at the scene due to severe head injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Vios, Lau Yong Kheng, 56, sustained injuries to his neck, legs and arms.

“Initial investigations revealed that the vehicle, which was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang in the right lane, had tried to avoid a lorry that changed lanes in front of it, causing the driver to lose control.

“Efforts are ongoing to trace the lorry driver and obtain dashboard camera footage to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement today.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to Tapah Hospital for post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the department received an emergency call at 8.53 pm, and a team from the Tapah Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.

He said the victims were found trapped inside the vehicle, and rescuers used special equipment to extricate them before handing them over to Health Ministry personnel and police for further action. – BERNAMA
