SONGKHLA: The Consulate-General of Malaysia in Songkhla and Thai authorities have agreed to establish a mechanism to improve the distribution of flood aid.

Malaysia’s Consul-General in Songkhla Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi said this was part of preparations to deal with the possibility of major floods such as those that hit Hat Yai last November.

He said warehouses that could be used to store supplies from Malaysia had been identified.

“When supplies from Malaysia arrive, we will immediately send them to the warehouses.

“We have also agreed that Thai authorities will distribute the supplies to those in need,” Fahmi said during a visit by a Perlis Journalists Association delegation to his office here recently.

He said if Thai authorities did not have enough manpower, non-governmental organisations from Malaysia could help.

“This is based on lessons learnt from last year’s major floods, when relief supplies from Malaysia piled up in Hat Yai because it was unclear who would distribute or store them.”

Fahmi said the consulate was coordinating with agencies in Malaysia to ensure aid could be channelled more easily from Thailand should floods occur in Malaysia’s northern states.

On last year’s major floods in southern Thailand, he said about 7,000 Malaysians were rescued.

He advised Malaysians planning to travel to southern Thailand between this month and January to monitor weather developments.
