Don’t be cynical about Najib’s apology, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there was no need to remain cynical over an apology issued by former prime minister Najib Razak over the 1MDB fiasco.

The deputy prime minister also said there was no need to read between the lines.

“The statement (apology) was made following the testimony by witnesses in court and Najib had come to a realisation then,” he told reporters when met after an event here.

Last week, Najib made an “unreserved” apology to Malaysians over the 1MDB fiasco, which had led to his incarceration in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

He said he had reflected on the scandal over the past 26 months and it pained him that it had occurred when he was the prime minister and finance minister.

He nonetheless insisted that he was innocent, and denied being the mastermind or collaborating with fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, in the scheme.

Detractors however had questioned the timing of the apology, which came six days before the High Court decides (this Wednesday) whether Najib is to enter his defence in the 1MDB corruption case that started five years ago.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has since welcomed the apology, although DAP’s RSN Rayer feared it could lead to a backlash.

When asked about Anwar’s decision to welcome the apology, Zahid said: “A leader must welcome an apology from anyone.”

Zahid’s statement was similar to Anwar’s defence of his response saying he had welcomed the apology in good faith “as any leader should”.

Najib is currently serving a reduced six-year sentence following a pardon after he was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International.
