Ex-TH chairman, ex-Treasury sec-gen released after 7-day remand

PETALING JAYA: A former Tabung Haji (TH) chairman and a former Treasury secretary-general have been released by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission after seven days in remand to assist in a corruption investigation.
The remand order against the two, which began on Aug 27, expired today and they were released this morning, Harian Metro reported.
They are among several high-profile arrests by MACC following the declassification of the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report on TH’s management, operations and assets from 2014 to 2020.
A former TH CEO was also arrested and remanded.

The RCI found that losses from troubled investments had gone unrecorded and that “creative accounting” had been used to justify annual profit distributions.
The commission also traced TH’s financial problems to political interference in board appointments, unsustainable hibah payouts, and the national audit department’s decision to soften its findings amid concerns about losing depositors’ confidence.
MACC chief commissioner Abd Halim Aman previously said the case was being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act for abusing one’s position to obtain gratification.
