Johor polls: Pasir Gudang Amanah to boycott PH's 'parachute' Permas candidate

JOHOR BARU: Pasir Gudang Amanah will boycott Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Permas state seat, Sharon Teo, in the upcoming 16th state election, labeling her a “parachute candidate”.

Pasir Gudang Amanah assistant secretary Haini Harun said the decision to boycott Teo was made together with the division leadership, which maintains its support for Pasir Gudang Amanah chief Syed Othman Abdullah to contest the seat.

“We had heard about the decision to name an outsider since May and a letter of protest was submitted to the state and central leadership, but we received no response.

“However, the party leadership still chose this parachute candidate, who is not only unknown to the Amanah machinery in this area but also to the voters here,” he told a press conference in Taman Cendana, Pasir Gudang today.

He said this was not the first time Syed Othman was sidelined as a candidate for the seat, having previously given way to a Bersatu candidate in the 14th General Election.

“Malay voters make up 56 per cent here. Furthermore, negative sentiments among Malay voters towards DAP remain strong, and we fear this will be linked to the candidate even though she is contesting for Amanah.

“Therefore, the Pasir Gudang Amanah machinery will not assist this candidate, but we will not stop her own machinery from campaigning,” he said.

Teo was announced as the candidate for the seat by PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Muar on Monday.

Teo, a protege of the late Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, said her nomination aligned with the Rahmatan lil alamin concept, which views Islam as a blessing for all.

In the 2022 state election, Barisan Nasional candidate Baharudin Mohamed Taib won the Permas state seat with a 7,926-vote majority in a five-cornered contest.
