KLANG: Employers have been warned against relying solely on photographs of MyKad displayed on mobile phones when hiring workers, following the discovery of a tactic involving altered identity card images used to secure employment.

National Registration Department (NRD) director-general Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias said the modus operandi involved replacing the photograph on another person’s MyKad before saving the image on a mobile phone and presenting it during the hiring process.

“The individual takes an identity card, changes the photograph and keeps the image on a phone. They then show the image to the employer and are immediately registered as a worker.

“It is very easy because there is no physical MyKad involved. Employers must play their part and ensure the person presenting the document is its rightful owner. If a passport is used, it must be valid, and if it is a MyKad, the physical card must be produced,” he said after Ops Kisar at a frozen food processing factory in Pulau Indah last night.

The operation was conducted by the NRD with enforcement teams from Putrajaya, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan, assisted by the Immigration Department and Labour Department.

Badrul Hisham said investigations found some suspects had borrowed MyKad belonging to friends or relatives without payment, while others paid RM350 for fake identity cards.

He reminded the public that using or carrying another person’s MyKad was an offence under the National Registration Regulations 1990, regardless of the purpose.

“Using someone else’s identity card for any purpose is an offence,” he said.

During the operation, which began at 6.30pm, the NRD detained 36 people – 32 women and four men aged between 18 and 50 — most of whom were Indonesians.

They are suspected of using fake MyKad or identity cards belonging to others to obtain employment.

The case is being investigated under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, with all detainees taken to the NRD headquarters in Putrajaya for further investigation.

The operation also led to the detention of 33 foreigners for offences under the Immigration Act, while the Labour Department is expected to take action against the factory under relevant labour laws.
