Cops nab Alor Setar teacher over sexual harassment claims

The school’s board of governors’ secretary Ng Kok Weng said the school received a call from police at 5pm on Saturday informing them of the teacher’s arrest on the same day.

“Based on information from the police, the school convened a meeting yesterday and formed a special committee to address this matter,” Bernama quoted him as telling reporters today.

Ng said the school had decided on the teacher’s immediate suspension from duty and prohibited him from entering the school premises to avoid further distress to the students involved until investigations are completed.

He said the school was fully cooperating with the police in their investigations and had submitted several documents and relevant information.

Ng said the teacher had been employed at the school since 2016.

“We have also reported the matter to the education ministry.

“All actions taken by the school have prioritised the mental and physical wellbeing of the students involved, as well as their privacy.

“Counselling sessions will be provided to affected students.

“To prevent such incidents from recurring, we have briefed all students and teachers.

“We have also established a dedicated complaint channel to facilitate reporting of any misconduct,” he said.

Bernama said Kota Setar police chief Siti Nor Salawati Saad was contacted for comment, but no official statement had been issued at the time of reporting.
