Akmal to attend Najib rally in personal capacity

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh says he will join the PAS rally on Monday in solidarity with former prime minister Najib Razak.

The Merlimau assemblyman said his support for the former Umno president remains unwavering, Berita Harian reported.

He stressed that as an Umno member, he respects the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s powers in granting royal pardons, and the party’s decision to not proceed with joining the rally.

“However, I will still attend in my personal capacity to show my support for Najib,” he was quoted as saying.

Yesterday, it was reported that Umno had pulled out of a rally planned for Monday to show support for the imprisoned former prime minister.

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party has full confidence in the grace and wisdom of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to grant justice to Najib.

Asyraf said Umno would abide by the king’s call to respect the royal prerogative on pardons and to abide by established procedures.

Pokok Sena Umno chief Farhan Ahmad today said he and members of the division would also be joining the rally.

He said there was nothing wrong with any group gathering to demonstrate solidarity with Najib, and urged its participants to remain focused on its original purpose.

“It is the responsibility of all Malaysians to uphold justice. Concealing the truth about the existence of the (purported) addendum contradicts the spirit of the Madani government.

“This gathering is primarily about showing solidarity with Najib and advocating for the recognition of his rights as outlined in the addendum. Let us keep politics separate from the pursuit of justice,” he said in a statement.
