King wants next PM’s majority to be tested in Parliament

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has decreed that the next prime minister’s majority be tested in the Dewan Rakyat.

Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said this was to ensure that the majority of the next prime minister can be confirmed in Parliament.

Earlier yesterday , Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun had sent letters to all 220 members of parliament, telling them to submit a statutory declaration (SD) each to nominate a name among them to be the next prime minister.

“After a prime minister is appointed, it was decreed (by the king) that the matter should not only be decided through the (number of SDs gathered) but it must also be brought to Parliament for confirmation.

“It needs to be confirmed in Parliament that this (particular) candidate is accepted because we want stability afterward.

“His Majesty also decreed that just because one person becomes the winner, doesn’t mean (he or she) will win all. There must be cooperation (among all parties).

“We need to look at (what’s important) such as the 12th Malaysia Plan and (2022) Budget which needs to be tabled and managed for the benefit of the country,” he said in an interview with Astro Awani today.

Shafie, who is Semporna MP, said the king had also told all political party leaders during an audience at the palace today to set their differences aside and work together during the pandemic.

“His Majesty reminded us that if there are any reservations (about one another), we should wait for the (15th general) election to offer our parties and ourselves to be the choice for the country’s leadership.

“Right now, we are facing big problems in terms of Covid-19 and our economy. All the leaders have said that God willing, everything that has been decreed by His Majesty must be prioritised by everyone,” he said. Nst
